The cherry on top of standout style & 5 musts/lusts

April 7, 2016  |  New York, New York

Having lived in NYC for (yikes!) almost 20 years — not to mention working in the fashion industry for the same amount of time — my uniform (albeit clichéed) for much of those two decades was primarily black with black, accented by black.

Now, while I would never abandon nor disparage that infallible, forgiving hue, I have only recently come out of the literal and figurative dark ages and started playing with color — and I feel like a kid in a crayon store.

Bright coats have been my no-brainer go-to, as evidenced here, here and here (often paired with black (!), navy or gray basics). But bold accessories — especially in true, rich red — feel so fresh and sexy right now. A saturated, scarlet lipstick is also irresistible (Blair Eadie does it best), despite the high-maintenance reality of constant teeth-checking and reapplication. (But, I have been experimenting with finding the perfect long-lasting blend of stain/lipstick/liner, because even the best formulations out there simply won’t stay put on my lips. I’m close to isolating a foolproof combo, so stay tuned for the big reveal!).

Meantime, check out these five must/lust, racy-yet-refined red accessories that are on my want list, with the most-flattering hue of ruby lipstick thrown in…because it’s totally worth the vigilance.

1. MAC Lipstick in Russian Red, $17

Red lipstick is best in a matte finish (glossy is always a bit louche, in my opinion), and this shade is universally flattering. Thanks to the blue undertones, it complements most skin tones and makes teeth appear whiter and brighter (did you know that yellow or orange undertones in any shade of lipstick can make your teeth appear less white?? #truth).

Block heel. Red suede. Enough said. (if you’re into the celebrity thing, Emma Roberts wore these exact shoes while out and about in LA last week).  They’re a recent addition to the Stuart Weitzman SS16 collection, and they’re available for pre-order now. I’ve pre-ordered!)

3. Alexander Wang Mini Lia with Rhodium, $650

This crossbody stunner is on my splurge list. I have always coveted Alexander Wang’s studded bags, and this new silhouette just might inspire me to pull the trigger.

4. Vanessa Mooney The Astrid Knotted Tassel Earrings, $45

Tassels are trendy, but I am madly in love with them and have been forever. I am especially attracted to the nautical knot detail in these shoulder-dusters (surprise, surprise). Oh, and these babies are 20% off TODAY during Shopbop‘s sitewide spring sale. Speaking of tassels, I am also completely obsessed with this dramatic hair tie, coming soon to my ponytail.

5. Iphoria Rouge Pur iPhone Case, $50

I have a thing for funky phone cases (even though I have broken way too many iPhones due to them not being encased in full armor). How cool is this rubber one that looks quite like a Chanel nail polish bottle?! It is also 20% off TODAY at Shopbop.
