I have never been one to dress in thematic colors on holidays, with the clear exception being July Fourth. I have gone all-out with red, white and blue mani-pedis and over-the-top color-blocking combinations that really should not be allowed in public. But as I fall more deeply in love with this all-American, classic palette (likely due to the fact that it comprises the inspiration for my Anchor House cottage renovation project), I find myself gravitating towards slightly more subdued and elegant (yet still fun!) combinations when celebrating our country’s independence. Here, my six picks for a stellar 2016 celebration outfit.
1. Suna Off-the-Shoulder Top, $52
The combination of preppy menswear-inspired stripes and a sexy, shoulder-baring silhouette makes this the perfect summer shirt. Tuck it into distressed, high-waisted white denim trousers, or wear it solo over your swimsuit as a beach cover-up. I plan to wear it long and loose with these cropped flare jeans. I also like this version and this version.
2. Stuart Weitzman NearlyNude Sandals, $398
If you haven’t gotten a pair of block heel sandals yet, DO IT. The silhouette of the summer will continue into fall and resort, so you won’t be a latecomer to the trend. This pair in red suede is a can’t-miss, and they are incredibly comfortable so you can go from parade to barbecue to fireworks without needing a foot rub.
I’m a sucker for great packaging, so I was immediately drawn to the cocktail shaker-inspired design of this bi-phase lip pigment in Fourth-friendly Cherry Symphony. Simply shake five times to mix the nourishing oil and pretty pigment, apply with the cushiony applicator, and you have non-sticky lips with a tint of color and a hint of shine. Perfect for a “done” look without looking “done.”
4. Lisi Lerch Coco Earrings, $88 (plus 20% off for the Fourth!)
I’m totally into tassels (hover over the A&S tip icon below for an easy tassel maintenance tip — yes, you need to know this!). These breezy statement earrings are the perfect accent for an off-the-shoulder top, and they’re available with clip-on or post backings. Tip: When purchasing larger earrings, especially if they have a bit of weight, I opt for clip-on so my piercings don’t get stretched out, because saggy earlobes freak me out.
5. Shiraleah Adalyn Zip Pouch, $48
Oh look! More tassels. And what’s better than tassels? Tassels AND pom poms. This elegant-yet-exotic woven cotton clutch is smartly sized at 11.5″ x 8.5″ to fit all of your summer day-to-night-out essentials. Dress it down with jeans and a tunic top or sizzle after sunset in a body-skimming navy blue midi dress.
6. R13 The Jane Wide Leg Jeans, $212 (50% off!)
R13 jeans are my go-to. They’re expensive, but the cuts and washes are unique, the denim is high quality, and I wear them constantly. The Jane silhouette is one of my favorites (I have this pair in blue), and this distressed version in barely-off-white just might be the perfect incarnation of white jeans (I love white jeans, but I don’t love when they’re so white that they seem to glow or even glare…I always look for white denim with a slightly ivory tint, which is usually imperceptible and still goes with everything). Tip: Go one size up in The Jane.
