denim shorts and chunky sweater

Spending fall weekends at the beach has inspired me to modify my off-duty wardrobe to include surf-inspired basics with a Bohemian vibe (vs. the grunge-glam pieces I usually go for in NYC…black jeans, plaid shirts, lug sole boots). Even though it’s starting to get chilly, I love the cool-prep attitude of oversized sweaters paired with distressed denim boyfriend shorts (just add a plaid throw to beat the chill). Even better, you don’t need an ocean view — or deep pockets — to tap into the laid-back look. To wit, this Weekend Update features fab finds for less than $100. (In case you missed it, check out the last Weekend Update here).

1. Beaded Sun Clutch, $98

This beaded clutch is surprisingly versatile — don’t think of it as a “special occasion” bag. Fill it with your essentials (phone, credit card, license, lipstick) and toss it in your tote. Grab-it-and-go for brunch with your besties. Pair it with an LBD for a night out. Pack it (it’s flat!) for a getaway. I love that it works for both day and night. Plus, I never met a tassel I didn’t like.

2. Heather Hawkins Shark Tooth Earrings, $98

Edgy and elegant, these hand-cast white gold plated shark teeth studs feature tiny black zircon gemstones. Other metal/gemstone colors available. If you stopped by Anchors & Sirens last week, then you are aware of my current lovefest with Heather Hawkins jewelry.

3. Zara Front Tie Sweater, $49.90

The relaxed silhouette, sandy hue and oversized lace-up detail make this the perfect casual-chic sweater. At this price, I’m considering getting one to keep at the beach and one to keep in the city! Of course, a classic fisherman’s knit is always appropriate — I have my eye on this cotton tunic version from L.L. Bean.

4. Levi’s 501 Shorts, $49.50

Can’t beat the basics. Buy now, wear forever.

5. Tata Harper Volumizing Lip and Cheek Tint, $36

Save time and keep your weekend beauty routine easy-peasy with this double-duty tint from Tata Harper’s 100% natural and non-toxic skincare line — available in a variety of shades.

6. Vans Scotchguard Faux-Shearling-Lined Slip-ons, $60

Comfy, cozy, cool. I love slipping these on first thing in the morning to beat the chill; they make my feet feel snuggled. Wear these now and wear them later — the Scotchguard treated leather uppers will withstand sloppy weather and the fluffy lining will keep your tootsies toastie.
