Straw (also wicker, raffia) bags are IT. They may be having a so-called “moment,” but they are truly wardrobe classics that simply say SUMMER. And CHIC. There are oodles of options out there, many of which I would love to add to my collection, but there is only one that beat out the (indulgent) Prada wicker one: the MUUÑ straw bag, specifically the Ninon.
This sturdy straw bag is the perfect size (i.e. it doesn’t feel too precious and it doesn’t look like it belongs exclusively at the beach); it has a very Dorothy/Toto-esque canvas pouch that disguises all the stuff inside; it has long straps that make it easy to sling over the shoulder and small handles for the ideal arm-crook hold; and the structured shape is just so…right.
The handmade-in-Ghana bags are finished in Paris and come in an extensive range of shapes and styles and colors. They’re available at Moda Operandi, Matches Fashion and MUUÑ.com (the shipping charge is relatively hefty, but prices are generally lower than other retail sites, so it sort of evens out — plus they have every style).
I’m carrying my Ninon with everything from my new Mara Hoffman linen midi dress (shown here), topped off with Kate Young for Tura cat eye Ally sunglasses (Kate and I worked together at Vogue a million years ago, and I am so proud of her!) and killer turquoise suede platform sandals from Stuart Weitzman to my Seafarer Work Jim jeans with a super-soft Monrow slashed tee.
